Nassagaweya township was surveyed in 1819, with settlers arriving soon afterwards from England, Ireland and Scotland.  A Sabbath School was established in Knowles School House (on Hutcheon’s Hill) in the early 1830s; the church was established in 1836.  The first church building was a frame building which was erected in 1839.  The stone building we meet in today (now a recognized historic building) was built in 1861.

In 1869, 58 people from Nassagaweya established St David’s Presbyterian Church in Campbellville.  Nassagaweya and St. David’s operated as a two-point charge (i.e. where two congregations are served by the same minister) from that time until November 2004.

Many ministers have served Nassagaweya and St David’s well through the years.  A few names that stand out are: Archibald Blair, who stayed at Nassagaweya/St David’s for 30 years (1885-1915) during which time the congregation numbered 204 members; Mary Farmery (1976-1979), the first female minister to serve the charge; Glen Soderholm (1991-2004), whose gifts and leadership helped us begin the transition into a 21st century ministry.

In October 2001, Sean Howard, then a student at Knox College, was appointed by Presbytery as part-time associate minister to the charge, but with primary responsibility for ministry at Nassagaweya.  As Sean approached graduation in the Spring of 2004, Glen Soderholm announced his resignation, making it necessary for Nassagaweya and St David’s to clarify their relationship.  Sean was inducted into the two-point charge in September as full-time associate minister with primary responsibility for Nassagaweya.  However, as God had been blessing both churches with growth, the congregations petitioned the Presbytery of Brampton in November 2004 to divide the two congregations into two pastoral charges.  The petition was approved, making Sean Howard the first person to minister solely at Nassagaweya since 1869.

As you can see from even such a brief look back, there have been many changes over the years, and yet Nassagaweya has continued through it all (we celebrated our 175th anniversary in June 2011!).  But the life and ministry of Nassagaweya is not all behind us, for we are continuing to seek God’s guidance as he leads us into the future.  We are thankful for our long history and all that God has done for us and through us here at Nassagaweya.  However, we are committed to continuing our mission of reaching out to our community with the good news of God’s love.  We believe that true fullness of life is found and experienced as fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ, and that God calls the church to connect in a vital and meaningful way with its neighbours and community.  We are excited and energized by what God is doing and will do among us.  If you are searching for a church home that is both rooted in history and reaching for the future, we would like to invite you to come and be our guest sometime soon.

Nassagaweya Church - Built in 1861, our church building has a simple, solid beauty about it that has stood the test of time. It was recognized as a heritage building in 2004.

Text Box: Minister Search

A Brief History

THE ROAD AHEAD……..

Beginning on December 1st, 2011, we entered a period of unfamiliar to many of us, a vacancy in the pulpit.  We will begin an exciting process which will lead to calling a new pastor.  During this process, we will carry on with our current activities, programs and worship services.  We have a very capable worship committee and musicians who will plan the services in the meantime and we have several people whom we can call for pulpit supply. We also have very capable volunteers who will carry on with the current programs.  All Worship Committee volunteers are welcomed and invited to volunteer.

A little bit about the process…. This process can take up to a year, but it can be longer or shorter.  It is an important process which needs to have much prayer and care and consideration and also, patience.  First, an interim moderator from within our Presbytery of Brampton (the geographical area of Presbyterian churches in which we are located) had been appointed.  Randy Benson, Minister of Claude Presbyterian Church on Hwy 10 in Caledon, will meet regularly with the session here and help us in this process.    A search committee is then formed.  Along with the session, a congregational profile will be generated and we will advertise in the colleges and in the Presbyterian Record.  Letters of interest will be received, interviews will take place, the search committee will make visit to hear the candidates.  The search committee makes a decision, the candidate is asked to come to NPC and preach for the call after which a congregational meeting is held, a vote is taken, the call is then taken to Presbytery for approval.  Each step take time and is done with prayerful consideration and we ask that all pray with the session and the search committee.  The Session will keep all of us informed as they are able.

We pray that each member will sense the presence of the Lord our God in a chair at the Pastor Search meetings and that the members will be in the direction He wants Nassagaweya to go.  After all, He is the only One who knows what is in the future for NPC and its people.

We pray for the search committee, we

pray for the pastor that is known to

you alone, that he or she be open to

your call. Give us your grace to follow

where you would

lead us, and grant

us your peace.
